Around 5,000 light years from Earth lies the Black Widow Pulsar, a neutron star in a binary star system that is stripping away and irradiating its companion dwarf star's atmosphere, just as the Black Widow Spider is famed for eating its mate. The proximity and inclination of this system have allowed us to take detailed measurements of the effect of a neutron star on its companion's morphology, and ever since, the term "Black Widow Pulsar" has been expanded as an umbrella term.
