On 23 April 2001, our astronaut Umberto Guidoni made history as the first European astronaut to board the International Space Station.

Guidoni launched on Space Shuttle Endeavour as part of its seven-strong STS-100 crew from Kennedy Space Centre.

Since then, the Space Station has grown immensely, as have the number of Europeans to have worked in it, together with the science experiments performed in orbit.
