Backmasking: Why We Hear Messages in Backwards Music

Thousands of people have heard the infamous Satanic verse in the reversed recording of Stairway to Heaven, by Led Zeppelin. The messages and coherency of the recording are truly chilling and send a shiver down your spine with the realism of it. Today, we will be looking at why we hear dark and sacrilegious messages in backwards music. We'll be looking at the deliberate technique of backmasking and how it was created; but also how our brains and instincts infer so much that we even hear backmasked messages where none were intended.

This was a pain to edit with my new microphone. I'm not too happy with how the audio quality sounds altogether anyway but, like with the Denver Airport one, I had to do it in the kitchen at my dad's with a lot of reverb (ugh). Half way through the audio corrupted so I had to reinsert and retrim everything. Generally a pain. Nonetheless, I'm proud of this and the depth it went into and I hope you'll enjoy it too.

Here's a little story on this video, for those that made it this far. My enthusiasm for backmasking dates back to over 6 years ago... back when I was 14 and I saw Simon Singh's live talk on it. That summer, I investigated the topic further and came across Led Zeppelin's case in far greater detail... and it truly terrified me. I planned to write a massive article about it on Blogger, as I began my digital career on Blogger aged 13/14. I researched this for ages, and even partially wrote the article and I did the Bittersweet Symphony demonstration with a headset and I wrote an entire script which was much more authentic. Of course, this was all lost with my old laptop unfortunately. A few years ago when my nan was beginning to deteriorate in health; I was spending a lot of time in her hospital with nothing but my phone and no games. And I returned to it once again, listening to the backwards recording over and over. I like things that can scare me, and having seen so much from the Deep Web to Poltergeist Cases, not much scares me like this did. Following the Conspiracy Cases episode on Numbers Stations in December 2016; I planned for backmasking to be my next topic and again after the next few episodes but never got around to it. Now, I'm finally glad I have it off my plate and I like how it turned out. Hopefully I'll be more frequent with this series in the future- as this was fun to research and it is my next huge career wish to be doing this sort of stuff that I can actually enjoy researching as my main channel focus. If I became like ReignBot I would be more than happy.
