The asteroid redirect mission was something that was dreamed up to give astronauts something to do in deep space that didn't require landing on a planet. Visit an asteroid, but not in deep space, an asteroid which would be towed into lunar orbit by a space tug.

It even featured in Kerbal Space Program, bringing us the Claw which lead to all sorts of shennanigans, but ultimately the space mission got cancelled in 2017.
